School Nurse: Mel Gaul

 

What do I do:

  • Promotion of good health and wellbeing

  • Targeted vision and hearing checks

  • Local, state and national health promotion initiatives

  • Health education including sexual health and healthy relationships, addictions and risk behaviours including drug and alcohol, resilience and mental health, body esteem, physical activity and nutrition

  • Assisting schools with the management of complex medical conditions

  • Addressing any medical issues that may be impacting learning

  • Drop in clinics for students to empower their health choices

When: On site at Burnie High

3 x days per fortnight (Fridays and alternate Mondays)

 

How to make an appointment: if you would like to see the nurse let your teacher or an office staff member

know and they can refer. You do not have to tell them why you would like to see the nurse or alternatively come and say hi during lunch time of a Friday and I can make an appointment for you.

Youth Worker: Giovanna Simpson

 

What do I do:

I work with young people who are disengaged at school with the aim of re-engaging them in creative, meaningful and intentional learning. I work with young people dealing with a wide range of challenges. I am here to be a helpful hand and friendly ear.

I am located in room 521 feel free to call in and see me anytime or ask staff to put in a formal request.

School Chaplin: Kristyn Rostan

 

What do I do:

​My main role is to provide emotional and spiritual support.  Keep your eyes out for opportunities to be part of different groups, and excursions.  I also have a Happy Chappy letterbox if you want to leave a message, make a time to catch up, or ask a question.  So next time you need a friendly, confidential chat…. or having a bad day, or a tough time…. or need some information, come and have a visit.

How to make an appointment: I have an “open door” policy, so you don’t need to have an appointment to come in and have a chat.  If I am not in my office (near the transition room), I can be contacted via the front office.

School Psychologist: Nicole Dutton

 

What do I do:

I provide interventions for learning, engagement and positive learner outcomes.

School psychologists are experts in mental health and learning in schools. These are some of the services I provide:

  • Counselling, therapy and programs for students and school communities

  • Assessments of developmental, cognitive and educational functioning to assist learning plans and educational adjustments for student learning

  • Consultation and collaboration with schools, staff, parents and other professionals and organisations

  • Promotion of the Department’s values of Equity and Excellence through building capacity in our schools through professional learning and information in our schools

  • Leadership, advice and support in response to crises and critical incidents that impact upon students, families and school communities

  • Creation of Respectful and Collaborative Relationships within school communities

  • Identification of needs and program development for assisting school improvement and wellbeing in schools and across the Learning Service.

What do I do:

I assist students with a wide range of issues, some of these include:

  • Emergency financial assistance

  • Personal safety and wellbeing

  • Attendance and retention

  • Relationships

  • Mental Health: depression, anxiety, self-harm, suicidal thoughts

  • Grief and loss

  • Parenting support

  • Homelessness

  • Pregnancy

  • Sexual Health

  • Sexuality

  • Drugs and alcohol

  • Critical Incidents

  • Bullying

  • Conflict resolution and restorative justice
